Managing Cause & Effect

“Setting an example is not the main means of influencing another, it is the only means.”

- Albert Einstein

The 3rd Annual Leaders of Integrity Awards Luncheon held last week in Newport Beach reached its zenith of purposeful clarity with Dr. Robert Spitzer’s keynote address, The Spirit of Leadership.

Hilary Kaye, President and CEO of HKA, Inc. Public Relations, was an attendee. Hilary’s big time take-away found expression in a blog post to her sphere of influence. She succinctly communicated Dr. Spitzer’s big picture understanding of what it means to act as an “authentically noble” leader with a contributive personality, rather than an ego-comparative personality. Take a moment to read how one professional with over a quarter of a century of OC business leadership went to the mountaintop with Dr. Spitzer to sharpen her skills as a leader of integrity.

Hilary writes, “The more common ego-comparative personality is debilitative. People with this dominant mode compare every step they take to others. They are constantly assessing their own successes or failures in the context of others’ successes or failures, and can’t be satisfied or happy unless they are better than the next guy.

“In contrast, the contributive personality does just that: contributes… without comparisons. These people seek to optimize the good in everything around them, as their primary purpose. As leaders, they are constantly seeking to contribute, for the greater good.  Truly inspired leaders of integrity have this characteristic. Unfortunately, this is all too rare.

“Dr. Spitzer concluded that inspirational leaders are believable, with noble visions. And of course they have principal-based ethics. Most importantly, each morning when they get up, standing before their mirror, they put on their contributive identity, before their ego-comparative identity.”

Hilary gets my High Five recognition for translating the message of the awards program directly into her personal and professional life.   Inspirational insight…glimpsing our greater self…is not meant to momentarily puff up; rather it pushes us to pursue new behavior that brings positive influence at home, at work and in the community.

 Mission Integrity Action

This week, I exercise leadership abilities defined by my contributive identity. This means one thing: authenticity as I live out values that find purposeful results as I influence my world for good.

Managing Cause & Effect

“Efficiency is doing things right; effectiveness is doing the right thing.”

- Peter F. Drucker

Who are the Go-To professionals and organizations we seek out? Whether fixing our car, teeth, finances or seeking counsel on a big ticket purchase, Drucker’s words describe two behaviors we desire in Go-To leaders and organizations in every professional walk of life.

Yes, efficiency and effectiveness are always found in the tool belt of trust! When we work and collaborate with individuals or organizations that employ these two tools, we know we’re in good hands! A case in point is Golden State Foods and its CEO & Chairman, Mark Wetterau.

Mark is an honoree at the 3rd annual Leaders of Integrity Awards program on November 1st. I had the opportunity to interview Mark and, in doing so, learned about the GSF creed, which states, in part, We believe in God and the dignity of all people.

How does Mark efficiently and effectively communicate this message in his leadership role with a company that services clients nationally and internationally? His leadership embodies the creed’s message as he maintains a vigilant focus on building GSF teams to works together, serving clients and solving problems in the context of every individual’s unique higher calling.

The continuous growth of Golden State Foods is rooted in the organization’s culture of doing things right and doing the right thing from the top down and the bottom up! Mark personally uses these two values tools with the vision of serving a higher calling that his leadership teams expect from him.

There is a cause and effect messaging at play by corporate leaders who understand that skilled business acumen producing profitable bottom lines can also be guided by values principles focused on serving a higher good.

In the opening decades of the 21st century, this story is finding traction in the emergence of Conscious Capitalism…where corporate means and ends are defined to produce enterprises shaped by workplace cultures harnessed in the dignity and worth of individuals to produce outstanding goods and services that enhance the lives of workers and society at large.

 Mission Integrity Action

Efficiency and effectiveness are power words in transition.   This week, I re-purpose these words not simply as indicators for excellent performance. I explore them as indicators now reshaping my perceptions of higher calling in my professional life.
